Bringing the case method to high school classrooms.
Ivey Community Engagement Club (ICEC) is a newly ratified club from the Ivey Business School that aims to engage youth in the London area through providing opportunities for HBA students to teach the Ivey case method in high school classrooms. Students will be able to explore a multitude of career paths and learn more about how business skills can play a role in their careers of interest.
Our goal is to promote diversity of thought within the HBA community, support underserved local students, and encourage more community engagement from Ivey students.

HBA Instructors are coached on their teaching and leadership skills in a 1-week workshop series held by key lecturers on our Faculty Board prior to classroom engagements.
What is the Case Method?
The case method is an innovative approach to business education that moves beyond traditional textbook learning. It involves the use of real business cases as the basis for classroom discussions and analysis. Students engage in a collaborative and interactive environment, exploring different perspectives and proposing solutions to complex business problems.
The method encourages active participation, critical thinking, and the development of decision-making skills. By examining and dissecting real-world scenarios, students gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies and challenges of the business world, preparing them for future leadership roles.
How Discussions are Held
Engaging in lively debates, students are encouraged to share their perspectives, and work together to tackle nuanced problems. Ivey student instructors will mediate student discussion and encourage active participation and ensure all viewpoints are explored. Through these dynamic discussions, students learn to assess complex situations, consider various factors, and arrive at well-informed conclusions. This collaborative approach not only enhances students' ability to think critically but also cultivates effective communication and teamwork, preparing them for the dynamic challenges they will face in their future career regardless of industry or path.
What does a case discussion look like?
1. Preparation
Before class, each student is given a case surrounding a unique issue or opportunity faced by businesses and will prepare their individual analyses. Students will to step into the shoes of the protagonist to identify critical information in the business's internal and external context, analyze key factors behind issues, and brainstorm their own recommendations.
2. Class Discussion
Students will share their ideas together in a class discussion with Ivey student instructors. Students will be able to work together to identifying root causes as well as synthesizing feasible and creative business solutions.
3. Wrap Up and Key Takeaways
Students will reflect and share their key takeaways and how they'll incorporate their learnings into their daily classes and extracurriculars. Significant themes and learnings will be reinforced throughout the entire year to build strong critical thinking and a problem solving toolkit.

ICEC 2024 Case Competition
At the end of the curriculum, students will have the opportunity to engage in a cumulative case competition.
The case competition will challenge students to apply the concepts they have learned in classes, including:​

Finalists from each school will be selected after students present in-class in Early March.
The winning team from each school will be invited to present their idea to a small panel of Ivey faculty judges.
Training Workshops
Workshop weekends are aimed at preparing HBA student instructors for teaching the case method and representing the Ivey brand. Emphasis is placed not only on fostering engaging student discussion, but classroom inclusivity.

Lecturers from both Ivey and Business Foundations will run workshops for students, touching on different aspects of the ICEC teaching experience. Workshop materials will be based on previous curricula, new curricula developed under the advisory of the faculty board, as well as the professor’s own experiences and insights. Workshops will also be held by upper-year Ivey students in the ICEC executive team.

Multiple workshops will be held throughout the year, touching on a variety of different topics. Workshops will be deemed mandatory, and planned to reduce overlap with any student/professor commitments.
